"Spongebob Poshpants"

I had to do a British accent today, which I was admittedly not totally comfortable with, as I'd originally planned some sort of mish-mosh Cockney-ish thing, but then was told to do something a bit more standard. And well, grah, I am not exactly dialect trained, you know? I pick them up fairly easily, but with time, and a bit of immersion/instruction. So, anyway. I did the best I could, but I cringed a bit at myself as certain vowel sounds came out brash and American, tumbling on the heels of some very posh-sounding flipped Rs and a bit too much of the too-too and utterly-utter, if that makes any sense.

Sigh. Our audience didn't likely know the difference, anyhow. I was probably one of two actors even really attempting anything approaching an accent today, anyhow. It was a fairly decent house, but these shows hardly seem about that. Sure, we give the community a good show, but I've been working with Pam and Ben for three shows now because they're so freaking fun. It's live theatre, mixed with the feeling of radio. It's fancy-free and a bit rickety, and I like that. It feels real.

I like being completely in character at the mike one moment, and then casually tossing back a big, toothy grin to the pianist as he transitions from Cheery Narrator Music to Scrooge's Doom and Gloom with an adept key change and breath-catch of pause. Hilarity. I like that Ben is able to come up to me right as the Announcer is stepping up to the mike, to tell me to do a new sound effect cue in the next minute. I like that Pam can ask me minutes before we start the show to sing an alto descant at Scrooge's tombstone realization, and that she trusts me not to goof it up without any rehearsal whatsoever. I got to do the bomb chimes again, which were great fun.

Last night, I had borrowed my mom's PT Cruiser, so I ducked out pretty quickly after the show and drove out to her house, where a family Christmas grab bag was going on. I managed to make it to the house at the tail end of the meal, so a plate was quickly prepared, and I cruised right into the tempo of the party with no hassle whatsoever. I was glad to get there earlier than I anticipated.

In the grab bag, I had my sister Brandy, so I got her something that I know she's been wanting, and Tyler will deliver it to her when he returns to Texas. Serendipitously, she also had me, so I got to unwrap a fun-looking Spongebob Squarepants Playstation 2 game. Rock on. Not an ugly sweater! Woot!
